Greenday, Regret, and My Magic 4-Step Protocol for Natural Sunburn Relief

Well, well, well. You forgot to reapply sunscreen again, didn’t you? Or, you did it on purpose thinking… I will just get a little sun. It started out so beautifully…just a walk, just an hour at the lake, just a little Vitamin D. But now your shoulders are flaming, your chest is radiating heat like a furnace, and you’re Googling “Can you die from sunburn?” at 2 a.m. Nothing over the counter seems to work. Plus, you are looking for natural sunburn relief, not chemicals that counteract your organic green smoothie you have been drinking for your summer glow up. So what do you do if you want natural sunburn relief? Have you found yourself googling, pintresting, hashtagging “Natural Sunburn Relief” over and over?

Same, friend. Same. I have been there.

Let me tell you about the time I learned the hard way that crisco is not sunscreen. I was 15. It was summer. I had just discovered the art of sunbathing and decided I wanted to “get a base tan” before a church youth camp. Now, mind you, I am naturally closer to translucent than golden. But I had an aunt who swore that crisco “intensified the sun” and that sounded efficient. And I am a sucker for efficiency.

So I slathered it on like I was marinating myself for a backyard BBQ. Laid out on my metal carport roof, in Texas, cause… 15 and non-developed frontal lobe. I baked in the sun for a solid three hours with greenday playing on my pink discman and not a single care in the world.

Cut to that evening: I couldn’t move. My skin was the color of a cherry popsicle and felt like it had been shrink-wrapped onto my body. I was in tears by 7pm, draped in a bed sheet because clothing was no longer an option.

It took two weeks, an entire bottle of aloe, and a complete loss of dignity to heal. And guess what? I still peeled. No tan, no glow. Just a lesson I would carry with me forever. Crisco does not belong in a pan and it for sure does not belong on teenagers trying to impress boys named Cody at summer camp.

Needless to say, I’ve tried it all. The green goo that smells like a frat house bathroom. The drugstore creams that swear they’ll cool you down but somehow make everything sting worse. The “just take a quick shower” advice that turns into actual torture. No thanks.

So let’s skip the drama and go straight to what actually works. Here is my magic four-step protocol for sunburns—simple, natural, and tested more times than I like to admit.

1. Apple Cider Vinegar Spray

I know it smells like a salad, but hear me out. This is the magic secret sauce. ACV helps balance your skin’s pH and takes the edge off that tight, itchy feeling. Mix it 1:1 with water in a spray bottle, and gently mist the area. Bonus: it also keeps kids (and husbands) from touching your sunburn because, again, it smells like a salad. ;)

2. Hydrate Like It’s Your Job

Sunburn isn’t just skin-deep. Remember, your skin is an organ. You’ve likely dehydrated yourself into a stupor, so drink water, add a pinch of sea salt or lemon, and consider an adrenal cocktail if you want to feel like a wellness overachiever. Your body needs help from the inside out.

3. Real Aloe. Not That Jelly in the Neon Bottle.

If you have an aloe vera plant, slice off a leaf and rub that cooling gel straight on your burn. If you don’t have a plant, get a bottle of 100% pure aloe gel—no alcohol, dyes, or added fragrance. Just the good stuff. It cools instantly and gives your skin a little space to recover without making things worse.

4. Coconut Oil—But Not Right Away.

If you slap oil on a fresh sunburn, you’ll trap heat. Don’t do that. Wait a day or two, once the sting has calmed down, and then apply a thin layer of coconut oil to keep the skin from peeling like a snake in the desert. Hydration is key, but timing is everything.

What to Remember

Sunburns happen. We can beat ourselves up or we can treat the burn, drink the water, and maybe throw a bottle of mineral-based sunscreen into the car so we don’t do it again next weekend.

You’re not failing. You’re just a human who forgot to reapply. Grace for that.

And if you want to build a more natural home, start supporting your skin, or figure out what your body’s been trying to tell you with all these weird symptoms—this is what I do.
